 Medical Nutrition Therapy and Counseling

What is medical nutrition therapy?

It involves assessing a person's nutritional health, and diagnosing problems that may be controlled
with nutrition interventions. An example of this would be diagnosing an inadequate intake of nutrients that is contributing to a person being underweight.

Once the problem is discovered, then the dietitian works on nutrition interventions with the client, and they set reasonable goals together.  Continuing with the example of an underweight client, the dietitian and the client may decide that the first goal would be to increase his/her calorie intake at meals and snacks.

The dietitian educates the client on how to reach the goal and follow-up on how the client is doing. Together they would decide whether the goal is met or if further interventions and education are needed.

Kristin uses this Nutrition Care Process whenever she works with a client. The process can be extended to the following conditions that she specializes in:
  1. Cardiovascular Disease and Hypertension
  2. Childhood Obesity
  3. Diabetes
  4. General Nutrition/Wellness
  5. Maternal Nutrition/Lactation or Breastfeeding
  6. Cancer/Oncology
  7. Adult Weight Management
  8. Alternative Nutrition
